A Strong alternative that shows the long arc.
Strong is a clean barbell log — but a lot of lifters drift off by month three when the numbers stop meaning anything. Ascend keeps the fast logging and turns every set into elevation on a real mountain, alongside nutrition, readiness and streaks.
The pain points that send lifters searching for a Strong alternative.
Progress stalls into a flat PR list — no visible long-arc payoff
iOS only, so half your gym crew can't join
Strength only — nutrition, cardio and sleep live in other apps
No habit or streak system to pull you back on a bad week
Pro paywall on plate calculator + extra templates
What Strong does better.
Strong's barbell-set UI is still the cleanest in the category, and its offline reliability is excellent for gym basements with no signal. If lifting is the only thing you track and you live in iOS, Strong is hard to beat on raw ergonomics — Ascend won't out-log it on a pure barbell session.
Where Ascend is different.
Ascend was built for the lifter who quit Strong because progress went invisible. Every set pushes a climber up a real mountain, so you feel compound progress — not an isolated PR list. Strength, cardio, nutrition and sleep all feed the same climb, with a forgiving streak (one miss is -1, not a reset) and real Android support. No per-feature paywalls, no ad SDKs.
Find your strength tier. Climb from Recruit to Apex.
Every muscle gets ranked by bodyweight-adjusted strength, not raw kilos — so a 60kg lifter and a 100kg lifter compete on a level field. Recruit → Climber → Summit → Apex, per muscle, updated every week.
- Per-muscle tiers ranked by bodyweight strength (estimated 1RM ÷ bodyweight)
- Fair across sizes — lighter lifters aren't punished
- Recruit → Climber → Summit → Apex, promote weekly
- Global + friends-only leaderboards
Switching from Strong — straight answers.
Is Ascend as fast to log as Strong?
Ten-second set entry is a core design constraint, and mid-set voice logging lets you log a set without putting the bar down. We're at parity on barbell sessions and faster on bodyweight and circuit work thanks to templates.
Can I bring my Strong history across?
An importer is on the roadmap — Strong exports JSON and Ascend's data model maps cleanly. In the meantime, Strong-logged workouts surface in Ascend via Apple Health if you let them sync, so you don't have to log twice during the switch.
Does Ascend work on Android?
Yes — iOS and Android both, with bidirectional Apple Health and Health Connect sync. Strong is iOS only, which is the most common reason crews look for an alternative.
